Some Filler Myths – Dr Eithne Brenner
Let’s bust some filler myths today!
Fillers are not a commodity. It matters hugely who is treating you with that filler, how skilled and experienced they are and their in-depth knowledge of anatomy.
The quality of the product is also extremely important and you need an understanding of the rheology of the product. Some are very runny and watery and great for fine lines and others are thicker and more suited to contouring. If you give David Beckham a football and you give me a football, one of us is going to be much more skilled (hint it’s not me! 😂)
There’s another myth that fillers can be dissolved very easily with the enzyme hyaluronidase( a prescription only injectable medicine).
Most dermal fillers ( soft tissue fillers) are made of a substance called hyaluronic acid, similar to that found in our own bodies.
While it’s true that hyaluronic acid fillers may be dissolved with this product, some fillers are much harder than others to dissolve and you may need several sessions of dissolving.
Filler needs to be topped up every 6 to 9 months- when I started using dermal fillers almost 20 years ago, we thought that many products lasted a year or under. Some certainly do. However, many fillers can last several years and this has been shown on ultrasound and MRI studies.
So you want it to be placed subtly, in the right amount, in the right place, and have it done properly to start with, rather than assuming that if it’s not right it could be easily wiped out with an enzyme.
I had some filler in my cheeks and lips over 2 1/2 years ago and they haven’t needed to be done since so you want a practitioner who will assess you overtime and not just add more filler at repetitive visits.
