Lip Filler
What are they?
Lip fillers are soft hyaluronic acid clear injectable gels that we use to add volume, definition and moisture to lips and the surrounding areas. We love working with clients to enhance their lips, as beautiful natural lips can really add to the proportion and attractiveness of the entire face. During the consultation we discuss your wishes in detail. We take photos of your face and look at your features and proportions to see what will best suit you, and we can tailor the results exactly for you. Some people want a very subtle look and others want more fullness – this is where the detailed consultation is essential.
What Are They Made Of?
We use hyaluronic acid fillers. These are soft gels that are essentially a form of natural sugar, identical to the hyaluronic acid (HA) that we have in our own skin. Hyaluronic acid gives plumpness and elasticity to the skin and soft tissues. Over time, the amount of HA in our body reduces due to factors like ageing and lifestyle. Fillers can safely replace lost HA or add it in areas that need more definition or fullness. These fillers are safe, predictable, and can be reversed (with an enzyme-dissolving injection) if needed. We never use permanent fillers in the clinic. Our brand of choice for filler is JUVÉDERM®. as it has a long track record of safety and clinical studies. It gives beautiful, natural results and is long-lasting, soft and smooth. JUVÉDERM® has several different HA products so we can choose the consistency that best suits you.
What Are The Benefits?
Lip fillers are very versatile hyaluronic acid gels, and they can be used in several ways to enhance the lips and surrounding areas of the face. We don’t look at the lips in isolation: we look at the lip shape, evenness, proportions of the face, how the lips look at rest and on smiling, and whether there is loss of support, or lines around the lips.
Lip fillers can be used to:
- Add overall lip volume, making the lips fuller.
- Add definition to the border of the lips.
- Add volume to the top lip, to balance the proportion between the top and bottom lips.
- Correct uneven/asymmetrical lips
- Reduce ‘smokers’ lines’ above the top lip. These lines occur in non-smokers too, as the surrounding areas lose some support with age.
- Add hydration to the lips, combatting dryness and reducing little vertical lines on the lips.
- Add definition to the Cupid’s bow area on the top lip.
- Help correct cleft lip scars.
- Turn up the corners of the mouth as these can drop with age, making you look sad or angry
What Is Involved?
Lip filler can be very subtle or more dramatic depending on what you want to achieve. A small amount can be tried first, more can be added a month or so later if desired. A very fine small needle or cannula is used, which is gentle and minimises the small chance of bruising. We use numbing cream to keep the discomfort to a minimum. The filler also contains a local anaesthetic medicine, which further helps to reduce discomfort. The treatment takes about 15-30 minutes. Some swelling after lip fillers is common and can last 1-3 days but icing after treatment can help to reduce it.
How Long Will Results Last?
Results generally last from 6 to 12 months depending on which product we use – we will discuss the choice with you in your consultation. Every person is different: skin condition, age and lifestyle are all factors. The temporary gels slowly dissolve over time and can be added to as desired. We never use permanent fillers in any of our treatments as they cannot be reversed or changed, and they can cause serious problems.
