What is it?

A square jaw is a feature that may not be always be desired, especially in females. It can be due to bruxism or in some cases it can be a genetic trait. Hypertrophy (increased size) of the masseter muscle can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections. This is desired by those who want to achieve facial slimming or jawline slimming. Slimming the jawline can help to convert a square shaped face into an ‘upside down triangle’ shape, and this is usually a more youthful and attractive facial shape. Anti-wrinkle injections are inserted into the main muscle that causes the bulk (the masseter muscle), the squareness of the jaw can be reduced significantly, and bruxism reduced. The procedure has no downtime, but there is always a possibility of a small bruise, it starts to work 1 week after the treatment and lasts for between 4 to 8 months. The result is usually aesthetically pleasing for those with hypertrophy or enlargement of the masseter muscle. Furthermore, there is often a significant symptomatic relief of jaw pain, headaches, clenching and jaw tension. The temporalis muscle, which is felt over the temples when clenching the jaw, is another target for anti-wrinkle injections. The temporalis muscle works together with the masseter muscles to help with chewing and closing the jaw. Although treatment of the temporalis muscle is less commonly sought after for cosmetic purposes, treatment can help reduce headaches caused by tension in this muscle.
