PRP- Platelet Rich Plasma

What is it?

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy is a natural, autologous method for skin rejuvenation and repair using the essential growth factors derived from peripheral blood, in the most desired amounts. Although platelets are best known for their part in the blood clotting process, these cells are also considered as a biochemical storehouse of growth factors that participate in recovery and healing of tissues by enhancing physiologic processes. PRP skin rejuvenation or otherwise known as the “vampire facial” is a powerful but safe treatment during which your own blood is extracted and processed in a special machine called a centrifuge, this separates the red blood cells from the Plasma, generating a rich serum known as Platelet Rich Plasma. This serum is layered onto the skin and worked into it using our SkinPen micro-needling device and may also be injected back into the skin with a very small needle. The SkinPen process alone also has additional collagen-stimulating benefits. The production of new collagen and elastin results in an improvement in the appearance of the skin, while improving overall skin tone and elasticity

What Can Be Treated?

This treatment can be performed on various areas of the body including the face, neck, hair and hands to treat:

  • Improves wrinkles and fine lines
  • Stimulates collagen and elastin
  • Naturally smooths & tightens skin for overall rejuvenation
  • Improves dark circles
  • Improves chest & décolletage
  • Treats hands for anti-ageing benefits
  • Improves acne scars
  • Improves stretch marks
  • Improves skin hydration
  • Improves tired looking skin

What Is Involved In the Treatment?

A small sample of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the blood platelets and plasma. While the sample is being prepared, a topical local anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin to numb the area for treatment. The platelet rich plasma is then injected into the skin using a very small needle. The treatment takes around 45 minutes and it causes minimal discomfort due to the local anaesthetic cream.

How Long Will Results Last and is there any downtime?

Usually, there is a 24hr downtime or recovery period after a PRP procedure where you need to avoid sunlight. Patients can continue their normal life routine 24hrs after undergoing the treatment. Following a PRP treatment the patient may experience minimal discomfort and slight redness at the treated site.

Results of PRP therapy can be seen from three to four weeks post treatment which continues to improve over time. We recommend treatment at a minimum of four to six weeks apart. Results can last from 12 to 18 months. Additional treatments may be required in order to achieve optimum results. Every patient is different; skin condition, age and lifestyle are all factors in the outcome of results.
